Grizzly Adams TV Show
Dan Haggerty created a rough, but lovable television character in the title role of "Grizzly Adams" during the two seasons that the series ran on NBC beginning in 1977. The series followed Adams' adventures as a frontiersman who fled into the mountains after falsely being accused or murder and was based on the 1974 theatrical release "The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams," which also starred Haggerty in the title role. Adams's best friend on the show was a large grizzly bear that he affectionately called "Ben" because of his admiration for Benjamin Franklin. Haggerty was praised for his work on the series that also included standout performances by other actors. Joining Haggerty as regulars on the series were an aging trader named "Mad Jack the Mountain Man," that was played by veteran television actor Denver Pyle and a Native American named Nakoma portrayed by Don Shanks. Adams is forced to survive among his new human and animal friends in the rugged outdoors, while keeping watch for bounty hunters who would force him back into civilization to face trial for a murder that he did not commit. Haggerty created an iconic television character in the "Grizzly Adams" TV show. While men appreciated his ruggedness and women were in awe of the actor's good looks, children enjoyed the wildlife featured on the show - especially Ben. Along with its connection to the movie starring Haggerty, the "Grizzly Adams" TV show was inspired from a 1972 novel by Charles E. Sellier Jr. and is said to be loosely based on the adventures of real-life trapper J. Capen "Grizzly" Adams. While much of the series was fictionalized for television, the "Grizzly Adams" still paid homage to the outdoorsmen of the old West with its location shooting, use of wildlife, and value oriented plots. Though the "Grizzly Adams" TV show only ran for two seasons, fans were allowed to see how his plight in the wilderness ended. During a 1982 television movie entitled "The Capture of Grizzly Adams" was lured back to civilization to save his daughter and was ultimately exonerated of the murder charge that initially forced him to flee from society.
