Airing on NBC for two seasons beginning in 1977, the "Grizzly Adams" TV series followed the adventures of its lead character played by Dan Haggerty after he flees into the mountains when he is falsely accused of murder. The series was based on a 1974 theatrical release "The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams," which also starred Haggerty in the title role. Adams' best friend on the show was a large grizzly bear that he affectionately called "Ben" because of his admiration for Benjamin Franklin.

Haggerty was praised for his work on the "Grizzly Adams" TV series that also featured standout performances by other actors. Notable among these was Denver Pyle as an aging trader named "Mad Jack the Mountain Man" and Don Shanks as a Native American named Nakoma.

The premise of the show was Adams' struggle to survive while keeping watch for bounty hunters who would force him back into civilization to face trial for murder. Haggerty created an iconic television character in the "Grizzly Adams" TV series. While men appreciated his ruggedness and women were in awe of the actor's good looks, children enjoyed the wildlife featured on the show - especially Ben.

Along with its connection to the movie, the "Grizzly Adams" TV series was inspired by a 1972 novel by Charles E. Sellier Jr. and is said to be loosely based on the adventures of real-life trapper J. Capen "Grizzly" Adams. While much of the series was fictionalized, "Grizzly Adams" still paid homage to the outdoorsmen of the old West with its location shooting, use of wildlife, and value oriented plots.

The "Grizzly Adams" TV series only ran for two seasons, but fans were allowed to see how the character's story ended. Adams was lured back to civilization to save his daughter and was eventually cleared of the murder charge that initially forced him to flee from society in a 1982 television movie entitled "The Capture of Grizzly Adams."
