The "Grizzly Adams" series DVD collection follows Adams' adventures as a frontiersman hiding in the mountains after wrongly being accused of murder. The series was based on the 1974 theatrical release "The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams," which also starred Haggerty. Adams's best friend on the show was a large grizzly bear that he affectionately called "Ben" because of his admiration for Benjamin Franklin. The "Grizzly Adams" series DVD collection includes performances that won praise for Haggerty, along with those from a supporting cast that featured veteran television actor Denver Pyle as "Mad Jack the Mountain Man," and Don Shanks as a Native American named Nakoma. The two worked with Adams as he is forced to survive among his new human and animal friends in the rugged outdoors, while keeping watch for bounty hunters who would force him back into civilization to face trial for a murder. Additionally, the "Grizzly Adams" series DVD collection will remind fans and those watching the series for the first time why Haggerty created an iconic television character on the show. Along with its connection to the movie, the show was also inspired from a 1972 novel by Charles E. Sellier Jr. and is said to be loosely based on the adventures of real-life trapper J. Capen "Grizzly" Adams. Much of the series was fictionalized for television, but "Grizzly Adams" paid homage to the outdoorsmen of the old West with location shooting and value oriented plots. Although the "Grizzly Adams" TV show only ran for two seasons, fans were allowed to see how the Adams' story ended. During a 1982 television movie entitled "The Capture of Grizzly Adams," the character was lured back to civilization to save his daughter and was ultimately exonerated of the murder charge that initially forced him to flee from society and that movie is included with the "Grizzly Adams" series DVD collection. The "Grizzly Adams" series DVD collection contains all 39 episodes from the show that are uncut and also the "Grizzly Adams" television movie on 11 DVDs.
